A Study on Respite Care Service Model for Family Caregivers with the Demented Elderly

Abstract
The purpose of this study is to derive formal respite care service system that caregiving family have less economic and emotional burden caused by caregiving activities. For this, the economic burden and stress by caregiving types of family
with the demented elderly was analysed empirically and using the results of analysis, discussion about effective respite care service model for family with the dependent elderly was provided. For this research, primary caregivers that provide
caregiving to demented elderly were drawn and surveyed by caregiving types of family. Among collected data, data for 439 primary caregivers were used for this study. The subjects used in this study consisted of family caregivers from various
settings that give care to the demented elderly. The 138 subjects were caregivers from family care that family provide most care, the 102 subjects were caregivers utilizing day care programs for the demented elderly, the 84 subjects were caregivers utilizing short term care, and the 25 subjects were caregivers utilizing intermediate care facility, the 90 subjects were caregivers utilizing hospital care. Based on the results of this study, economic cost model, stress model, combination model by caregiving types of family with the demented elderly could be composed. The three policy implications could be obtained. First, family¡¯s economic burden caused by caregiving activities is high. Second, The respite care services utilizing partnership of families and institutions are more effective. Third, it need to develop flexible respite care system of combination type.
